Interestingly enough, Abby Whiteside's approach to learning is very often the only effective cure for repetitive use injuries. Many pianists and other instrumentalists suffer from various forms of tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other disorders of the wrists and fingers. Cures for these problems range from long term rest to diet adjustments to physical therapy and are often unsuccessful. Sophia Rosoff, Abby Whiteside's principle inheritor of her legacy and lifelong student and teacher of the Whiteside approach reports numerous successes with these difficulties, often through seemingly minute adjustments in the way the student uses their body while playing. Many of these injuries are likely formed by a distorted over use of one particular muscle group. The Whiteside approach, since it encourages use of the body as a whole and the rhythmic distribution of the initiation of power across multiple muscle groups, from center to periphery, tends to solve injuries automatically. Again, rhythm works its magic.
